SABAI 80 Izakaya: 80 THB Dishes in Phra Khanong

I found this place while walking through Narong night bazaar, to see if anything was new at the usually pretty dormant market. The bright yellow sign caught my attention first. Classic Izakaya branding with a red circular motif against brown matte walls.

What hooked me was the pricing structure. Every dish costs exactly 80 THB (€2.20 / $2.40 / £1.90). No mental math required.

The Setup at SABAI 80

The wooden door has vertical glass panels that give you a preview of the interior before entering. I pushed through and found a medium-sized dining room with dark walls and warm wood accents. Track lighting provides focused illumination without being harsh.

Long wooden tables paired with dark chairs. The far end opens to the kitchen area with stainless steel elements and blue-tinted lighting. Proper Izakaya execution – not trying to be a fusion experiment.

The temperature inside stays comfortable. I noticed framed photos on the walls and glimpses of the kitchen through window openings along the left side. Everything feels intentional but not overly designed. Just simple.

The Food Presentation

They serve everything on matte black dishware. I ordered the sliced beef, which arrived on a large black plate with generous portions of seared meat, light seasoning, and fresh herb garnishes. The rustic plating style lets the ingredients speak for themselves.

I also tried their salad – a small bowl with creamy base, orange carrot shreds, and dark raisins. The green vegetables come in a separate black rectangular tray with herb sauce. Clean presentation throughout.

The portions justify the 80 THB price point. I spent 240 THB (€6.60 / $7.20 / £5.70) for three dishes and felt satisfied.

Operating Hours and Location

Open 5 PM to 2 AM daily. Consistent schedule, which I appreciate for late dinners or drinks with colleagues.

Located inside Narong night bazaar on Sukhumvit 42 in Phra Khanong. Note though that it’s far down the soi, as you have to pass Rama 4 road. It’s suggested to take a Grab even if you’re coming from the BTS rather than walking. The storefront is compact but easy to spot from the street.

The Service Approach

Run by Japanese staff, which shows in the attention to detail. I’ve heard from expats in the area that the authenticity is genuine – not adapted too much for Thai tastes.

Service stays efficient without being rushed. They know their menu and can explain dishes clearly in both Thai and English.

The Downside

Limited seating means you might wait during peak dinner hours. The space accommodates moderate groups but fills up quickly on weekends.

Also, 2 AM closing means you can’t get late-night food past that point. Still, by far most other options in the area close earlier, so this is still better than average.

The 80 THB flat pricing works well for most dishes, but some might feel like better value than others depending on portion size and ingredients. It’s all in all very well worth it for the location and I’d say to definitely give it a try if you’re around!
