Le Café Phénix
Le Café Phénix in Khlong Toei offers great coffee, tasty desserts, and a cozy, quiet vibe perfect for solo dining or working on your laptop. It’s wheelchair accessible, serves breakfast to dinner with quick bites and small plates, and has plenty of parking plus good options for kids.
Le Café Phénix Bangkok for Remote Work: Good Looks, Spotty WiFi, Standard Coffee
I still remember that the place was under construction for a long time, and I kept wondering what the circular building with gray blocks would become. After they finished it I was happy to see that it would be a coffee shop. A Tom N Toms Coffee, the 24/7 Korean coffee chain. It’s in such a convenient location.
After some time the owner dropped the franchise and went solo. The building is still the same, just rebranded to Le Café Phénix and it fits the European cafe vibes inside. It’s nice vibe and is next to the Gateway Bangkok mall. But looks aren’t what I’m here for.
Working at Le Café Phénix: Layout and Power Access
The space handles laptops fine. I grabbed one of the teal plush chairs near the glass walls during a 5-hour session. Large brick walls, modern geometric shaped lights overhead. Varied seating means you can choose based on your goals for your visit, lounge couches or standard tables.
Those standard tables, with stools, give you a plug. Some window seats get you power as well. I plugged in there without issue. Natural light floods through the glass walls, which helps when you’re staring at a screen for hours.
The layout is open. Too open. Glass walls don’t buffer sound. When the place fills up, you hear everything.
WiFi and Noise at Le Café Phénix: The Trade-offs
Here’s what matters. The WiFi clocked at exactly 10Mbps on my speed test when I arrived at 10am. Not terrible for browsing. But if you’d be having a Zoom call it will buffer at times. During peak lunch time the connection became unreliable and I had to switch to my phone’s hotspot. If you’re on video calls or uploading large files, plan (your data allowance) accordingly.
Noise is the second problem. The open layout amplifies every conversation. A group of tourists sat near me around 1 PM and I couldn’t concentrate for 40 minutes. Glass walls look nice but they echo. For focused work, come before 11 AM or after 8 PM.
I didn’t encounter mosquitoes during my afternoon sessions, but I’ve heard evening visits can be different given the mall’s semi-outdoor connectivity.
Vibe and Pricing at Le Café Phénix: The Numbers
The visuals work. The arched windows, the whole European brasserie setup transported into a Thai mall. The pastry display shows croissants and layered chocolate cakes arranged nicely. In the late afternoon they also make fresh batches that give the place a nice smell.
Here’s what you’ll actually pay. Drinks start at 80 THB for a black tea (€2.0 / $2.5 / £2.0). A Grande Hot Cafe Mocha costs 140 THB (€4.0 / $4.5 / £3.5), similar to a Grande White Chocolate Mint Frappe at 160 THB (€4.5 / $5.0 / £4.0). A Grande Espresso costs 75 THB. The taste is standard.
For food, toast like Choco, Caramel, and Almond Caramel all sit at 159 THB each. A muffin costs 89 THB.
For comparison, Starbucks around town charges 150 THB for a Grande Latte and 160 THB for a Grande Mocha, nearly identical pricing. You’re not paying a premium over the mainstream chain next door. But you’re not getting better coffee either.
They do have Lavazza coffee as well as their house blend, but the price just isn’t worth it. Lavazza is around 200 THB (€5.5 / $6.5 / £5.0) for a cup.
Practical Details for Remote Workers
One thing to note, and won’t expect is that there are no toilets inside. Le Café Phénix sits on the G Floor of Gateway Ekamai, or just next to it actually. To go to the toilet, simply go inside Gateway and you’ll find restrooms within a two-minute walk. Still, it means that you’re either packing up your laptop and walking through a busy mall every time, or you take the risk to leave your stuff in the cafe. Now thankfully I’ve only been pickpocketed (in front of Central World), and so lost my stuff once in my many years. So I tend to leave my stuff and walk out but it still feels odd to do so.
The 24-hour operation delivers. I tested late evening around 10 PM and found the same service level, same lighting, and calm atmosphere. That consistency matters if you’re working international hours or odd shifts. Their official Facebook page confirms the 24/7 hours, their phone number is 092 446 2453. They have a meeting “room” (no door), but it’s usually used by the owner. Still, if you need to use it, best to call in advance to check availability.
Le Café Phénix: Final Verdict for Digital Nomads
Use it for short informal catch-ups during the day time peaks. The European styling gives it a nice vibe. Then given that its open 24-hours a day make it workable for early morning or late night, and that’s when you can do deep work sessions. Still, use your own hot spot, as WiFi just isn’t strong and stable enough.
As for the coffee, don’t bother, it’s better to go to EGEIRO Coffee 2 min away..
