Most people think Bangkok’s rooftop scene peaked with sky-high venues like Tichuca. They are wrong.
I’ve watched Tichuca evolve from newcomer to full-blown tourist processing center. Located on the 46th floor of the T-One Building on Sukhumvit 40, it promised to democratize Bangkok’s rooftop experience. What it ended up delivering is something else entirely.

I went back again after I had stopped going. I hoped that things had improved but when I arrived early to catch the sunset I learned that it actually got worse. Arrivals get processed. Yes, processed. The system assigns queue numbers at check-in, which opens around 4:30pm. Numbers are announced one by one. Wristbands follow. Then the mandatory drink purchase kicks in.
There is no entrance fee. Instead, you are locked into ordering at least one drink per person at 400-500 THB (approximately $11-14, €10-13), then you need to add the going 10% service charge and 7% VAT. Now mind you, 10% service charge is a standard, but it hurts when the price is high and the service low.
The View Trade-off on the 46th Floor
The perspective from floor 46 does deliver. Bangkok spreads out below, and during golden hour, the city’s chaos becomes almost poetic. If you secure a spot by the railings.
Most people begin queuing at 4:30pm for a railing seat. By 6pm, the prime positions are taken. I have watched guests circle tables, waiting for a vacancy. One group stood near the railing for twenty minutes hoping someone would leave. They never got the spot.
The space spans floors 46-50, but “floor” 47 – 50 is actually a sort of tower that goes to a higher deck on the 49th and 50th floor. It’s tiny compared to the 46th floor and you can’t really count it as a floor. The main drawback then becomes the crowd. It’s packed and the idea of a rooftop is that you can actually breath, have space. Tichuca often feels like you’re competing for air.

The drinks menu focuses on tropical fruit cocktails, which sounds promising, especially with the theme to match until you taste them. Quality ranges from acceptable to forgettable, depending on which bartender handles your order.
The cocktails start at 400 baht, similar to every other bar at this altitude. The difference is the execution. The neighbourhood offers better cocktails for less. But they do not come with the Instagram backdrop.
The staff varies. Some nights you will encounter genuine service. Other nights, it feels like mass handling. This time I watched three drinks delivered to the wrong table in a row. Nobody apologised. That moment crystallised what this place had become.

We understand the economics. Tichuca optimised for volume, not experience. The wristband system, the mandatory drink structure, the queue numbers. These are crowd control mechanisms designed to process 200+ guests per evening. As if they’re processing parcels on a conveyor belt.

If you need the shot for your feed, Tichuca delivers the backdrop. The 46th-floor views are legitimate, and the space photographs well when the lighting cooperates. Sunset between 6pm and 7pm offers the best conditions.
But if you want genuine Bangkok hospitality, craft cocktails, or a venue where you are treated like a guest rather than processed like inventory, this is not it.
The best rooftop experiences happen when venues prioritise the people inside rather than the people looking at photos later. Tichuca chose the latter.
Over the years I’ve given it its chance, before it was discovered by the world it was a great spot. They could have kept it that way but they focussed on quantity over quality.
The economics make sense for them. Premium location, high volume, Instagram-friendly aesthetics. The trade-off is an experience that feels more like a transaction than hospitality.
That is why I skip it these days. Bangkok offers better.
